RULES OF DRESS AND APPEARANCE

PIKE COUNTY SCHOOLS DRESS AND APPEARANCE CODE

1. A clean and neat appearance is required of all students

2. No student's appearance or clothing will be acceptable if it is deemed disruptive,

provocative, indecent, vulgar, or obscene, or if it endangers the health or safety of the

student or others.

3. At all times, personal decency, dignity, self-respect and respect for others should dictate

student dress.

4. Students are prohibited from wearing, possessing, using, distributing, displaying, or

selling any clothing, jewelry, emblems, badges, symbols, signs, graffiti, or other items that are

evidence of membership or affiliation in a gang. Oral jewelry (grills) is not permitted

5. Skirts, dresses, and/or shorts shall not be shorter than fingertip length. (Those of a shorter

length which are worn in physical education classes or athletic events may be acceptable while

students are engaged in such activities. (Skirts, dresses, and/or shorts shall be no higher than midthigh.)

6. No sagging pants are allowed. A belt is required if pants do not remain at the waist. Clothing

designed to fit at the waist shall be worn at normal waist level and no exposing undergarments.

7. Clothing must not reveal midriff, backs, cleavage, or chest/torso area. Shirts and blouses must

cover the waist and go past the waist line.

8. Students are not to wear halter tops/tank tops, clothing bearing lewd/vulgar or offensive

themes/remarks (including tee shirts advertising alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, or illegal drugs or

products).

9. All students shall wear shoes. 10. Students may wear earrings, but are prohibited from wearing

other visible body

piercing(s) jewelry. (No visible body piercing other than the ears.)

10. Headbands, bandannas, chains, and hip cloths are not acceptable. Hats and caps (or other head

coverings), can be worn outside only, unless the student can present a medical note stating otherwise

or approved by the principal.

11. No items that could be used as a weapon, such as large chains, spiked collars, spiked cuffs and

fishhooks are allowed.

12. Tight clothing such as knit or spandex bicycle/biker pants or overly tight pants are not allowed

13. Clothing or jewelry which advertises products that would be illegal such as drugs, tobacco,

and alcohol products, as well as any clothing which depicts statements or pictures that would be

offensive, will not be permitted. Clothing recognized as being related to a group or gang, such as

rolled up pant legs or bandanas will not be allowed. No clothing or insignia that can be denoted as

membership in a gang will be allowed.

14. School SBDM councils have the authority to enact additional and more stringent dress and

appearance codes for their individual schools. These codes are district wide minimum dress and

appearance codes.

15. All students and parents have the right to determine what the student wears unless the student's

appearance or clothing:

a. Is substantially disruptive;

b. Is provocative or obscene;

c. Endangers the health or safety of the student or others;

d. Is gang-related; or

e. Violates the reasonable dress code adopted and publicized by the Pike County Board

Students shall wear adequate, modest clothing of such design as shall be

consistent with standards set by Discipline Committee.

Students shall maintain clothing and personal hygiene. (Hair and skin must

be kept clean. Hair shall be combed and kept well groomed.)

Students shall wear shoes for foot protection and hygienic reasons while on school

grounds or aboard school transportation.

Decoration, symbols, mottoes, or designs imprinted or attached to the body or clothing

which are offensive to good taste or the maintenance of good decorum shall not be worn

to school or to school functions.

Bare midriff outfits and see-through clothing are not appropriate wearing apparel for

either boys or girls during regular school sessions. Students wearing cut-off jerseys

must wear a T-shirt underneath. Blouses with spaghetti straps on the shoulders are not

appropriate. Skirts shall be worn that extend beyond a student's fingertips when that

student places their arms to their sides.

Shorts worn by students shall be no shorter than 6 inches above the knee or must cover the

mid-thigh region of the leg. Shorts shall be worn that extend beyond a student's fingertips when

that student places their arms to their sides.

Blue jeans or pants with holes in the material should not have holes above the student's

fingertips when a student places their arms to their sides.

Students in P.E. classes for boys must wear shirts.

Hats are not to be worn in the school building unless on special occasions with the

principal's permission.
